Beginner’s Guide: How to Catch Your First Wave 🌊
Share
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of catching your first wave. The adrenaline, the freedom and the pure joy of connecting with the ocean. If you’re ready to begin your surf journey, follow these essential steps to catch your first wave:
Choose the right spot
A beginner-friendly location is the key to a positive experience. Look for spots with: Small, consistent waves. Sandy bottoms for safety. Fewer crowds so you have space to practice In Attica (Greece), beginner-friendly spots include Vouliagmeni when there are southern winds and Kokkino Limanaki with northern or northeasterly winds.
Gear up properly
The right equipment can make all the difference in your first surf experience. You’ll need a soft-top surfboard, which is bigger, more stable, and safer for beginners. A leash, so you never lose your board and a wetsuit, depending on the water temperature. Never forget your go-to swimsuit, our One-Piece Ocean Whispers or the Rosy Current Bikini.
Learn the basics on land
Before entering the water, practice your pop-up on the beach. Lie on the board with your hands under your chest. Push up quickly, bringing your feet under your body into a low, balanced stance. Your back foot should be over the tail or fins, while your front foot should point slightly forward.
Paddle effectively
Good paddling is essential to catching waves. Keep your body centered on the board for balance. Use long, deep strokes with closed fingers and high elbows. Look forward, not down, to maintain alignment.
Timing is everything
To catch a wave, position yourself so that the wave breaks just behind you. Start paddling as the wave approaches matching your speed with it. When you feel the lift, paddle harder and get ready to pop up.
Pop-up and go!
When the wave picks you up, push your chest up with your hands. In one smooth motion, bring your feet under your body. Stand in a low, athletic stance with bent knees and arms out for balance. If you’re not ready to stand yet, practice riding the wave lying down to get used to the feeling.
Safety first
Don’t “drop in” on other surfers—respect the lineup. Stay calm if you fall—protect your head and resurface slowly to avoid your board or the wave. Know your limits—don’t push yourself into waves or conditions you’re not ready for.
Have fun and be patient
Surfing takes practice, and it’s okay to fall often! Celebrate the small wins—whether you stood up for one second or just felt comfortable in the water. Every session is progress.
